A drama based on Anna Segher's novel Transit Visa from the 1940s. The film takes place in modern France, but the story shows a young German Jew who fled from the Nazis during World War II. The young man's name is Georg, but he comes across the identity of a dead author and uses it to move on. In Marseille he meets a young woman who is looking for her husband. It soon turns out that the man she is looking for is the man whose identity Georg has taken over.

Director Christian Petzold has previously done Phoenix and Barbara. The film was nominated in the category Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival 2018.
