«Sisi», as she was called, became empress in 1854 when she was 16. She was widely known for being one of Europe's most beautiful women, and she created the trends at the time. But we encounter Elisabeth in 1877; she is celebrating her 40th birthday and must struggle to maintain her public image. She is known for her slim figure, and asks her servants to tighten her corset to counter the rumours that say she has put on weight.

With a future of obligations ahead, Elisabeth rebels her fate and creates a plan to ensure her legacy. She travels to England and Bavaria where she sees old lovers and friends, and tries to regain her youthful joie-de-vivre.
