Nathan (Asa Butterfield) was diagnosed in the autism spectre as a little boy and has always struggled to relate to people. Not least to his loving and patient mother Julie (Sally Hawkins), who is a widow. Numbers are the only thing that make sense to him. Nathan's caring teacher, Mr Humphreys (Rafe Spall), shows interest in his talents and makes sure he gets a place on the British team in the International Mathematics Olympics. Then the young math wonder goes to training camp in Taipei, where, along with a group of other socially inconvenient teens, he discovers that he may not be as stingy as he himself thought he was.
Inspired by director Morgan Matthew's own BAFTA-nominated documentary, Beautiful Young Minds, X + Y is a touching, heroic and fun story about young people who experience everyday life as a mountain they must climb, and that through the only language they really speak - math.
