When her adoptive mother dies, the colored woman Hortense wants to track down her biological mother. To her great surprise, she discovers that her mother, Cynthia, is white. That doesn't stop Hortense from contacting her. Cynthia agrees to meet her daughter, but insists there must be a mistake when they first meet. But as old and repressed memories return, Cynthia realizes that Hortense is really her daughter.

Eventually, a warm and close mother-daughter relationship develops between them. What remains now is that Cynthia introduces Hortense to her two other children - Roxanne and Maurice. When she first does, it happens at the worst possible time!
