French Maria Vial (Isabelle Huppert) runs a coffee plantation in an unspecified African country. The plantation is doing poorly, and a civil war has broken out, making the situation even more uncertain. When the French forces withdraw from the country, they give Maria the opportunity to join, but she decides to continue fighting for the plantation, the home, the family - and her life.

Renowned director Claire Denis' White Material is a moving account of a woman who experiences the aftermath of colonialism in Africa.
