When the famous poet Pablo Neruda escapes the regime in Chile to a small Italian island, the life of the young fisherman Mario takes a turn. Neruda receives large amounts of mail, and to cope with the increased workload, Mario helps the regular mail carrier on the island. Mario doesn’t have any education, but soon begins to appreciate poetry and a friendship starts to grow between him and the poet. When Mario falls in love with Beatrice, who works at the island's only café, he realizes that poetry can help him express his feelings for her. 

Il postino was nominated for five Oscars in 1996, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.
