American author Tom Ricks (Ethan Hawke) comes to Paris desperately after putting his life back together and regaining the love of his divorced wife and daughter. When things don't go as planned, he ends up in a run-down suburban hotel, where he has to work as a night watchman to make ends meet. When one day he meets Margit, a beautiful, mysterious woman, his life takes a brighter turn. But their passionate and intense relationship triggers a series of unexplained events ... as if an obscure power takes control of his life.
