Driver is a stunt driver by day, getaway driver by night. It does not matter what he must do, Driver is most comfortable behind the wheel of a car. Shannon is both the mentor and manager of Driver. He is fully aware of Diver’s great talent, and he points this out to film and television directors, as well as criminals who need someone to help them on the run. Most of the money finds its way into the manager’s pocket.
Shannon's latest plan is to invest into a vehicle Driver can use in a professional car race. Since Bernie Rose is Shannon's richest acquaintance, he is asked to be an investor in the project. After seeing Driver behind the wheel on the racetrack, Bernie says yes, and brings in a third man, Nino, on the team.
