This is the true story of the East German families Strelzyk and Wetzel, who in September 1979 made headlines around the world. They secretly worked to construct a hot air balloon, which would enable them to escape from the dictatorship in the east to freedom in the west. A bold and courageous plan, where both the preparations and the escape itself, puts them in focus for the security service Stasi with its informants located everywhere. And when the Stasi inevitably gets on the trail of them, the families' flight becomes a battle against the clock, where every second counts.
Balloon was a huge success in his home country, where it was seen by more than a million.
