Laura and Alec are both married to different people when they meet by chance at the train station while waiting for their trains home. They immediately like each other and friendship soon grows into love. They begin to meet secretly, but as their relationship deepens, it becomes increasingly unsustainable and marked by feelings of guilt and lies.

This gripping drama from 1945 deals with a subject that was controversial and taboo for its time. The film is based on Noël Coward's one-act play Still life and was nominated for three Oscars.
