When the little rag doll 9 first comes alive, the world has already gone under. All people are gone. Only by chance does he discover that a small community of like-minded people is hiding from scary machines that roam the landscape with the intention of harming them. To despite the fact that he is the newcomer in the group, 9 convince the others that nothing will happen well out of hiding. They have to be on the offensive if they are to survive, and they have to find out why the machines really want to destroy them.
