The American boy Peter and the blind kobzar-musician Ivan's fates are joined in the turbulent 1930s in Ukraine under the Soviet regime. When Peter flees to the local train station after his father is killed, he is attacked by a group of young boys. The blind kobzar Ivan rescues Peter and together they head for Moscow and onwards to Kharkiv, while the government net is closing around them.
