It is an icy winter during World War II, and two partisans from the Soviet resistance movement are looking for food. They fight not only against hunger, but also against German soldiers and the biting cold. When they take a sheep from a German leader, they are unfortunately discovered. The ordeal they now face will be their toughest so far.
Larisa Sjepitko's The Ascent was awarded the Golden Bear as well as the Critics' Award at the Berlin Film Festival, and is an emotional account of survival and ideals during World War II.
