The film Official Secrets, based on appalling, true events, tells the poignant story of Katharine Gun (Keira Knightley), a British intelligence specialist who routinely handles confidential information.
One day in 2003, in the run-up to the Iraq war, Gun receives a note from the NSA with shocking content: The United States is asking the United Kingdom for help in gathering compromising information on UN Security Council representatives to pressure them to vote for an invasion of Iraq. Gun cannot just watch the world being squeezed into an illegal war, so Gun makes the desperate decision to defy his own government and leak the note to the press.
Then begins an explosive series of events that will set the entire world on fire, exposing a huge political conspiracy and exposing Gun and her family to imminent danger.
