Twenty-five years after the German Democratic Republic (GDR) collapsed, filmmaker Petra Epperlein returns to her childhood proletarian Oz to find out the truth about her late father's suicide and rumors of his past in Stasi. Was he an informant for the secret police? Was her childhood a studied fiction?

As she searches for answers in Stasis's extensive archives, she pushes her own ostalgia aside and enters a parallel world where she sees her past life through the lens of the oppressor. She reconstructs everyday life in the GDR through Stasis's classified surveillance recordings, and the past plays out as dystopian science fiction, as a gloomy backdrop for the study of the control apparatus and the meaning of truth in a society where every action and thought was suspect.
