16-year-old Lilja lives in a tired and poor suburb somewhere in the former Soviet Union. Her only friend is the young boy Volodya. Together they go around the area and fantasize about how to make life easier to live. One day, hope is kindled when Lilja falls in love with Andrej. He asks her to come to Sweden and start a new life.
