At the beginning of the 20th century, the Peazant family lived on a Creole island off the coast of Georgia. Their ancestors came as slaves from West Africa several hundred years earlier, but the Peazants do their best to manage their cultural heritage in a changing world. It is said that a future lies on the mainland - another step away from their roots. The family faces the dilemma of compromising either their identity or their opportunities for a better life. Daughters of the Dust is the award-winning debut film by director Julie Dash.
