"Kwaidan" means "ghost story" in Japanese, and refers to the content of this classic horror anthology from Kobayashi. The film is described by the legendary film critic Roger Ebert as "a collection of ghost stories that are among the most beautiful films I have seen".

It won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
