An honest and engaging portrait of the artist Amy Winehouse's life, from her childhood until she tragically died of alcohol poisoning in 2011.
Despite the fact that she only managed to release two albums, Amy Winehouse is one of the greatest music icons in British history. She was a pop star with a soul, with a musical talent that crossed cultural and demographic boundaries. The voice was often described as a combination of Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan. While the music made her a star, her chaotic personal life stole the headlines. Violent success, combined with a wild lifestyle and complicated love affairs made her a favorite object of an increasingly ongoing tabloid press. Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in July 2011, aged 27.
Through a collaboration with producer James Gay-Rees, director Asif Kapadia tells about the extraordinary life behind the sensational headlines and the story of a talented young woman whose life ended far too soon. With this film, the world will fall in love with the real Amy Winehouse and her incredible music again.
