In a remote monastery in Australia in the 1940s, a nun, Sister Eileen (Cate Blanchett), runs a home for orphaned Aboriginal children. In the middle of the night, a new boy is abandoned. A boy who seemingly has special abilities. When the monastery receives a precious relic of Christ on the cross, the boy has his first encounter with Jesus. And he becomes completely mesmerized. But the boy's Aboriginal spirituality contrasts with the monastery's Christian faith, and his mysterious powers become a threat.

Sister Eileen faces a choice between her own religious traditions and the truth embodied in the boy. The film tells a story of struggle and the price of survival.
