Tony Fingleton grows up in a dysfunctional family in 1950s Brisbane, with an unemployed and alcoholic father who pushes his children to the limit. Tony is a brilliant swimmer, but in his father's eyes he cannot measure up to his brothers Harold Jr. and John. But despite the harsh circumstances, Tony does not lose hope of winning his father's love - and maybe even an Olympic gold medal.
