We are thrown into 1930s Germany. A young academic named Dr. Jakob Fabian works making advertisements for a cigarette company during the day and at night he wanders the city streets in brothels. He is a sober and distant type who falls in love with Cornelia, a lawyer who has ambitions to become an actress. As her career begins to blossom, his future prospects begin to fade.
