Alexandre is an unemployed young man in Paris. With the May uprising fresh in his mind, he tries to navigate the new social landscape, but finds himself easily lost and lost. But still he manages to find love, both in the motherly Marie and the free-spirited Veronika.

Jean Eustache's The Mother and the Whore became an instant critic's favorite, winning awards at both Cannes and Berlin, and is considered the director's great masterpiece.
