Sils Maria

123 minutes 2014 6.8

Twenty years after the breakthrough role as rebellious Sigrid, actress Maria Enders reluctantly agrees to play in a new production, now as an elderly and vulnerable Helena. Maria despises the role and worries that the Hollywood scandal child Jo-Ann will play Sigrid. At the same time, the replica pugging has a destructive effect on the friendship with the younger assistant Valentine.

A timeless generational conflict is discussed in Sils Maria, a frequent meta-commentary drama: Helena is challenged by Sigrid in the play, Maria feels threatened by Valentine's opinions in the film, and a third level is revealed in the interplay between a classic theatrical Binoche and a magnificent naturalistic Stewart. Foggy Swiss Alps and a bold leap in time give the film an almost mythical dimension.
