He is, for many, best known as Bridget Jones' father or as the odd professor who has to be persuaded by Harry Potter to return to Hogwarts. But Broadbent's career streches in many directions.
He grew up in a family with a love for acting, and graduated from London Academy of Music and Dramatic art in 1972. After several roles on stage, he starred in his first film in 1978. is repertoire spans from children's movies to action-thrillers, and in recent years he has had great succes with drama on film.
In the moving Harold Fry's Unexpected Pilgrimmeage he goes on foot to say goodbye to an old friend, without luggage and with continuous messages to his friend to stay alive until he arrives.
In King of Thieves the gang is planning for one last heist, as the 77-year-old thief Brian Reader gathers his criminal friends to do a robbery.
Iris is about the writer Iris Murdoch who develops Alzheimers, and her husband through 40 years. Broadbent won a Oscar for his role as the husband, John Bayley.
