Taxi driver Charles is having an unusually bad day at work. Parking tickets, trouble with money and a haltering marriage are dark clouds hanging over him. So all he sees is stress when his last customer insists on a detour with many stops. But the elderly and elegant woman in the car starts telling him about her life. Madeleine's stories distract Charles from his own life, and the irritation goes away. The cab-ride offers them both a journey back in time that provides a new perspective on the present.
