The uncompromising and seductive artist Ingrid poisons her lover in a fit of morbid jealousy. She is sentenced to life in prison and her 15-year-old daughter Astrid is then thrown around between different foster homes. The daughter desperately tries to form her own identity, but even though Ingrid is behind bars, her powerful influence is the only lasting anchor point in Astrid's life. When Astrid befriends the same-age Paul, she finally finds a loving and understanding foster home. But can - and will - she help her mother get out of prison?
