Friday film // week 28
Critically acclaimed drama from star director Ettore Scola.
This week's Friday film offers a small piece of Italian film history. Director Ettore Scola's first international success is a classic comic drama in the commedia all'italiana genre. It is considered one of Scola's very best films.
Friday film: We All Loved Each Other So Much (C'eravamo tanto amati)
Gianni, Antonio, and Nicola are members of the resistance movement during World War II. In the aftermath of the war, they meet from time to time to drink, philosophize, discuss, and not least to fall in love with beautiful women.
In the following years, their paths continue to cross, and we get glimpses into their lives and how it unfolds, for better and for worse. They gradually discover that nothing is as it was. Or as Nicola says in the film: “We thought we'd change the world, instead the world has changed us.”
The film won several film awards in its time and is a mix of history, nostalgia, comedy, and classic lines.
