Filmoteket celebrates 5 year anniversary

Long live Filmoteket!

Filmoteket was launched in April 2020 as a long awaited service for the library patrons. Due to the pandemic and the need for digital content when libraries closed, the service was launched ahead of time. From the start the catalogue held only 125 films and a few months later it amounted to 500.

In the five years since the launch, Filmoteket has accumulated more than 2300 films in its catalogue, adding 5-7 films each week. Both feature films, documentaries, short films and series for grown-ups and children are available, in all categories.

Approximately 260 libraries covering some 84% of the Norwegian population offer this service, and new patrons sign on every day.

"I am proud of of Filmoteket for making it easy for patrons to access digital quality film from around the world, easy and safe, not using their bank card, but their library card!", says Filmoteket's Tonje Holtan Tellefsen.

We frequently receive good feedback on the films and the curation from patrons, libraries and filmmakers. That means we are doing something right! Here are some of them:

"I am extremely impressed by their catalogue and curation. Best I've seen in Norway:) I recommend it to everyone." (Benjamin Ree, director, Magnus and Ibelin).

"At our house we have a tradition of watching films on Saturdays together as a family. We are two adults and two daughters, and we take turns choosing films. Thank you for the fantastic service you provide!". (From patron Gunnar F. to our Customer Service).

"I just wanted to say that I think Filmoteket is a fantastic service. There are few other free services such as this, and I really appreciate it. I also think the films have real variety and class". (From patron Sigrid K. to our Customer Service).

From all of us at Filmoteket: Thank you for using our service!
