Fridayfilm // week 33
What is nightmare and what is real?
Children can sometimes struggle to know the difference, especially when the most complicated things in life take place at home. For Conor the truth is detrimental. This week's Friday film is a heartbreaking dark fantasy-drama about losing your ground in a chaotic world.
This week's Friday film is A Monster Calls.
12-year-old Conor lives alone with his mother, in a large house in the countryside. He manages mainly on his own, but struggles with the school bullies who threatens and beats him up. He finds consolation in his drawings, and is particularly active, talented and imaginative at drawing.
Precisely 7 minutes past midnight one night, a monster appears and won't leave him alone. The monster has three stories to tell, and Conor must tell the fourth and final story. But will the truth set him free?
The film is a literary adaptation of Patrick Ness' book by the same title, and was nominated for, and won, several film awards. These are some of the actors in leading roles: Sigourney Weaver, Liam Neeson and Felicity Jones.
