Friday film // week 36
Mission in outer space.
In this week's Friday movie, we meet a woman with an unusual and risky job. She is in the process of training for a mission that will separate her from her home and family, possibly forever.
Friday film: Proxima
Sarah is training at the Cologne European Space Agency for a mission to the International Space Station, which will last for one year. As the only woman participating in the mission, she feels lonely. The physical as well as mental challenges posed by the thought of the duration of her mission trouble her, as does the possibility that she may never come home.
The British actress Eva Green (Casino Royale, Euphoria) stars in this sci-fi drama alongside veteran Matt Dillon. The film has won several awards, including at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
Funfacts:
In the last fifty years, around 60 women have flown into space, compared to 500 men. Many of the women who have traveled out have conducted groundbreaking research and discoveries. Marine biologist Jessica Meir (known, among other things, for the first spacewalk with only women) is both an aquanaut (under the sea) and an astronaut.
