Have you heard about the caste-system? This week's Friday film is a story about the American society through the ages, focusing on the similarities and differences between the people, and with a theory of why it is so. 

Friday film: Origin

Isabel Wilkerson has won the Nobel prize in Literature. Now it's time for her next literary work, but what should she write about? When unforeseen and painful events in her life forces her to change her circumstances, a chance to explore and challenge the idea of racism appears. 

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard, Ray) plays the role of Isabel, and Jon Bernthal her husband. The director is acclaimed Ava DuVernay, also known for her political engagement.

In 2010 DuVernay founded the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM) to distribute films made by, and with a focus on, African-American people. DuVernay refers to AFFRM as "not so much a business, as a calling".
