Theme: Holocaust

The unthinkable that cannot be forgotten.

This year 80 years have passed since the first survivors were rescued from Auschwitz. This week marks Holocaust Day, in part to remember the more than one million people the Nazis killed in the camp. 

The following films tell the story, in in their own way, of the time before, during and after Holocaust. 

 

Night and Fog 

Night and Fog is a very intense documentary, one of the first, and also one of the most important, about Holocaust. It provides heartbreaking insights into the terror of the camps. 

 

The Zone of Interest

Next door to the atrocities in Auschwitz some of the staff in the camp led ordinary lives with their families. The Zone of Interest is a racor sharp, terryfying and thoughtprovoking look at how these lives may have played out.

 

The Conference

Early morning on 20 January 1942, in a villa in Wannsee in Berlin, leading members of the Nazi regime met. There was only one item on the agenda this morning: the plan the Nazis called "the final solution" : an organized and systematic genocide of millions of Jews in Europe. 

 

In Darkness

Two men works the Polish town Lvov's sewers to plunder what they can during the German occupation of the town. One day they encounter Jewish refugees, and decide to help them escape the Nazis and survive underground. The film is based on a true story. 

 

Phoenix

June, 1945. Seriously injured, and with a damaged face, camp survivor Nelly returns to Berlin to find her true love. She want to rise from the ashes. But first she must find out who betrayed her. 

 

Bye, Bye Germany

The film highlights the Jews who were left in Germany after the Holocaust. Even if it plays out in a certain period of time, it draws parallell lines to similar events in more modern times, reminding us never to stop learning from the past.
