We are in Montana, in a grand and gorgeous landscape framing the story in the film. Through the eyes of big brother Norman, we follow the family in the beautiful surroundings, not least the river, that gives life to nature and fosters fish to be caught on a fly. Norman is observant, calm and disciplined, while little brother Paul is stubborn, proud and makes his own choices in all matters. 

A true story

A river runs through it is based on Norman MacLean's true story, that he, some 40 years later, managed to write down. Director Robert Redford was then alllowed to film it, and the result is a filmatic masterpiece about life where all things "melt into one, and a river runs through it". (Norman MacLean).
