Friday film // week 51

The songbird from Camden.

At the age of 27 one of the great singers of our time passed away. Her relatively short and turbulent life and her bright career is the theme of this week's friday film.

Friday film: Back to Black

Working class girl Amy Winehouse grew up in a house filled with music from the "good old", such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Aretha Franklin. She developed into an outstanding soul-, jazz-, rhythm-and-blues artist, and a talented songwriter.

One of her two albums is ranked as no. 33 on Roling Stones "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". She wrote her own songs, and often about her own life and the turbulent relationship with her boyfriend.

The movie was well received by audiences and critics. Wall Street Journal decribed it as "...detailed, vivid, enthralling---necessarily full of pain" (K.Smith, May 2024). Others have commented that the film seems like a sort of redemption for the tabloid treatment otherwise given Winehouse in the media.
