Friday film: Shoplifters (2018)
As the title suggests, Shoplifters is about a family that steals groceries to put food on the table. One day, they decide to take in a little girl of six or seven who is not being well cared for by her own parents.
Critical reception
Kore-eda deservedly won the prestigious Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival for Shoplifters in 2018. It was also unanimously praised by an international body of critics and aptly described by the industry magazine Variety as an "Oliver Twist for our time."
The film was Japan's Oscar entry in 2019.
