Fridayfilm // week 2

Welcome to a world of contrasts!

It's a beautiful summer's day and Rudolf and Hedwig have invited friends of their children for a swim in the paddling pool in the garden. Hedwig admires the garden and enjoys the beautiful flowers, while Rudolph smiles as the kids howl with delight. The only disruption to the idyll is the noise from the neighboring building.

Friday film: The Zone of Interest

Hedwig is a stay-at-home mom taking care of everything that goes on in the house with a skilled hand. Rudolf works as a commandant in the facility located next to the house, the Auschwitz concentration camp.

We follow the daily life in the Höss household, the small routine events, the visits they receive and the conversations they have. Sound clips and gazes over at the wall and adjacent buildings hint at the horrors that are taking place right next door.

The Zone of Interest is an absurd and frightening image of our ability to adapt to – and accept – unthinkable atrocities. A "strong, stylish and distinctive drama about the Holocaust seen from a completely unexpected perspective." (Filmpolitiet, NRK, januar 2024)
